Downtown Springfield Inc. plans to change its nonprofit designation from membership-based to a community-focused donation-based model.
The organization has existed for three decades to support businesses in the city.
DSI announced Tuesday that the organization is applying for 501(c)(3) status in order to shift from member-only services to initiatives to benefit the entire community.
Financial support to DSI would be tax-deductible under the new designation.
DSI also said existing programs will be updated and new programs will be launched to reflect the changing character of downtown Springfield. More information is on the DSI website at downtownspringfield.org.
