Law enforcement and transportation officials announced Wednesday morning that every Illinois State Police officer killed in the line of duty will be honored with a memorial sign along Illinois roadways.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said during an Illinois Trooper Day news conference at ISP headquarters that 73 uniform signs representing each fallen trooper will be erected during the next several months.

Kelly said while the state has installed several such signs over the years, not every fallen trooper was represented.

The memorial sign project is a joint effort of Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Tollway and the ISP Heritage Foundation.

Signs planned in Sangamon County include those for Trooper Roy Kyle Moody, who died in 1949; Trooper Clarence Swain, who died in 1959, and Trooper Pete Lackey, who died in 1972.
