Some Illinois lawmakers say they’re frustrated over delays in distributing money to nonprofit groups that operate after-school programs.
Capitol News Illinois reports that 18-million dollars that lawmakers approved for those programs in this year’s budget was just distributed to organizations in April.
Those organizations now have to spend that money before the end of August or return it to the state.
The Illinois State Board of Education says there were delays in approving grant awards this year, in part because lawmakers approved more funding than the agency requested.
Last year, 50-million dollars in after-school program funds were never even distributed. The agency says that was because lawmakers did not give clear instructions about how they wanted the money allocated.
