The Springfield School District 186 on Monday formally approved a land swap with Ball-Chatham schools to accommodate construction of a new District 186 elementary school on the north side of the University of Illinois Springfield campus.
The Ball-Chatham board approved the agreement in its most recent meeting.
District 186 officials proposed constructing a new building to consolidate Hazel Dell, Laketown and Southern View elementary schools. The Ball-Chatham district receives the Hazel Dell site in the agreement, although District 186 continues to operate Hazel Dell this fall. Neither of the parcels is currently taxable.
The Sangamon-Menard Regional Office of Education and its board must approve the agreement for it to take effect. District 186 must break ground on a new school on the site within two years under the agreement.
