Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill into law on Tuesday to create a statewide ban on using cell phones in schools.
Capitol News Illinois reports there are exceptions if a device is used for health management, special education purposes or English translation services.
Districts also have the option to allow high school students to use their phones during lunch and passing periods.
Governor Pritzker says the ban will make classrooms more focused and productive.
Schools will not be allowed to use fines, suspensions or law enforcement to enforce the ban.
Every district must have a plan in place by the 2027-2028 school year.
