Smart metering is coming to City Water, Light and Power customers.
During Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, the Springfield City Council placed a 15-year agreement on next week’s consent agenda.
Swiss metering technology company Landis+GYR will provide the advanced metering infrastructure for just under $12.8 million.
The smart metering will allow CWLP to more quickly and accurately pinpoint issues in the city’s electrical grid.
The utility has previously suggested that the technology would also give customers a better look into their electrical use.
Chief Utility Engineer Scott Rogers said the deployment of the smart meters will be based on CWLP’s billing cycles with equal benefits across the city.
Rogers noted the ordinance only covers the acquisition of the equipment. A future ordinance will address installation labor costs.
