Repairs of a large water main in downtown Springfield that broke Thursday evening have been completed while work on repairing the street above the main continues.
The 24-inch water main ruptured Thursday at about 5:30 p.m., flooding nearby streets and buildings. Power was restored to the affected locations at about 2 p.m. Friday. Replacement of a 20-foot section of the water main was completed late Friday night. City Water, Light and Power water division manager Todd LaFountain said the failed main was made of cast iron and installed in 1953.
City officials said Friday that Monroe Street between 4th and 5th streets is expected to be closed for about two weeks for repairs.
City public works crews are inspecting nearby sewers and infrastructure for further damage.
