On Wednesday (January 22), Christie’s held a live auction for items from Jeff Beck: The Guitar Collection. The objects up for auction included over 130 guitars, amps, pedals, and various “tools of the trade” from the personal collection of rock and roll legend, Jeff Beck. One specific prized guitar from the collection – Beck’s celebrated Oxblood Les Paul that he acquired in 1972 – sold for a remarkable $1,317,111 at auction, blowing past the pre-auction estimates of $350,000 – $550,000. “Originally it was not an Oxblood. It was a Gold Top,” described Amelia Walker, head of private and iconic collections at Christie’s auction house. “Fans will know it from the cover of his debut solo album, Blow By Blow, released in 1975, recorded with George Martin. He used it for the encore at the end of David Bowie‘s final performance as Ziggy Stardust in July 1973.” (Blabbermouth)
