The Trump administration has reversed a prior decision by the U.S. Department of Education, revoking Illinois’ approval to extend the liquidation of $77.25 million in federal pandemic relief funds.
This decision, announced on March 28, affects funds intended to support the state’s highest-need students, forcing school districts to reconsider certain essential services.
Illinois had already spent 98.5% of its federal pandemic relief funds, with the remaining $77.25 million obligated but not yet expended. The funds were intended to address supply chain issues, staffing shortages, and other pandemic-related delays.
Previously, the U.S. Department of Education had granted an extension for the liquidation of these funds until March 28, 2026, for obligations made on or before September 30, 2024.
