Springfield Teen Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity

By Greg Halbleib Jan 22, 2026 | 5:30 AM

A Springfield teenager has been found not guilty by reason of insanity of the stabbing death of his adoptive mother in July 2024.

Jonathan Long was 16 when Springfield Police were called to his home on Shadow Fax Drive in the Twin Lakes subdivision, where they found 51-year-old Misty Long with stab wounds.

She later died at an area hospital.

A medical expert report in the stipulated bench trial indicated the youth had regained fitness to stand trial but had suffered from a chronic psychotic issue at the time of the incident.

A treatment plan will be developed within the next 30 days.
