Illinois House Approves Redistricting Constitutional Amendment

By Greg Halbleib Apr 23, 2026 | 5:31 AM

Voters could be asked to allow lawmakers to rewrite the state’s redistricting laws.

Capitol News Illinois reports the House approved a constitutional amendment that creates a priority list of factors lawmakers would have to follow when drawing legislative districts.

Supporters say it’s a response to fears the U-S Supreme Court will strike down voting protections for minority communities.

Republicans say the amendment would be a tool for Democrats to increase their majorities in the legislature.

Voters would have the final say on the amendment in November if the Senate approves it next week.
