Federal prosecutors say they’ll drop the main felony conspiracy charges against a handful of politically active protesters who demonstrated outside a Chicago-area immigration facility last fall.
Capitol News Illinois reports the unexpected move comes less than a month before the remaining four defendants of the so-called “Broadview Six” are set to go to trial.
The group, which includes former congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh, still face misdemeanor assault charges for allegedly impeding a federal immigration agent from doing his job.
The charges stem from a late September demonstration, during which a federal agent drove his S-U-V into a crowd of protesters who attempted to block it with their bodies, banging on the vehicle’s windows.
