Illinois election officials say the state’s voter registration lists are accurate and up-to-date, and safeguards are in place to prevent noncitizens from accidentally getting registered.
Capitol News Illinois reports New Jersey officials acknowledged this week that a software glitch in that state’s motor vehicles agency inadvertently allowed more than 6,000 non-U.S. citizens to become registered.
Illinois experienced a similar software glitch in 2019, allowing roughly 545 noncitizens to become registered. But officials say that problem was quickly resolved and 15 people voted.
The U.S. Department of Justice recently threatened to prosecute state election officials who fail to keep noncitizens off their voter rolls.
