The first human case of West Nile virus in the state has been reported.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said a person in southern Illinois was hospitalized due to complications from the virus.
The department said the case is the earliest onset of human illness from the virus since 2016.
The virus is spread to humans by infected mosquitoes. IDPH said about 8 of 10 people infected with West Nile do not develop symptoms, and about 1 in 5 develop a fever with other symptoms, including headaches and body aches.
