Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe is formally open after a ribbon cutting on Tuesday afternoon at the Springfield complex with local and state leaders.
Governor JB Pritzker said the complex provides an important outlet for youth sports as well as local tourism.
Ground for the 70-acre site was broken in September of 2023. The 190,000-square-foot Springfield Clinic Dome is the largest air-supported sports dome in the world. The dome was inflated last June and began hosting events in October.
The complex includes eight multipurpose outdoor fields and a training facility.
Dirk McCormick and Steve Luker of Legacy Park Sports LLC developed the complex, which is a public-private development funded through private investors and a portion of the City of Springfield’s hotel-motel and sales tax.
The governor’s office said Scheels Sports Park is expected to attract 250,000 visitors and bring $25 million to the local economy each year.
